About COMPASS

Compass Health Career Pathways, a UC Merced program, helps students explore careers in health care. Compass is part of the Merced County Health Career Coalition, funded by the 21st Century Pathways to Health Careers, an initiative of the California Endowment. The coalition is developing programs to increase the diversity and number of health care professionals serving in the San Joaquin Valley. Many of the programs help to raise awareness and engage youth, especially Latino youth, to address cultural and language needs in health care. The coalition aims to increase awareness of health careers.

Compass is led by Stergios Roussos, Ph.D., and Kirsten Mengell. Compass recruits UC Merced undergraduates to be guides for middle and high school student “explorers.” Participating schools see Compass as an opportunity to raise expectations for college and to motivate their students to build bonds with undergraduates interested in pursuing health careers.

Since June 2016, Compass guides and explorers have participated in a variety of activities such as a interviewing with health care professionals, creating public service announcements about community concerns and identifying their career goals based on concerns in their communities. The guides work with explorers to understand health care careers within the larger goals of understanding and addressing disparities in health and health care.
